What is a Lever Hoist?

A lever hoist, also known as a lever block or ratchet lever hoist, is a portable mechanical device used to lift, lower, or pull heavy loads. Unlike electric hoists, it is manually operated by a lever handle that actuates a ratchet and pawl mechanism. This allows for precise movement in small increments.

Commonly used in construction, mining, and industrial maintenance, lever hoists are versatile tools capable of operating horizontally (for pulling/tensioning) as well as vertically (for lifting).

How to Use a Lever Hoist

  • Preparation: Secure the top hook to a fixed anchor point (shackle, beam clamp, etc.). Attach the bottom hook to the load directly or via a sling. Ensure the safety latches on both hooks are closed.
  • To Raise/Tension: Turn the selector lever (pawl rod) to the UP (⬆) position. Operate the lever handle with a pumping action to lift or tension the load.
  • To Lower/Release: Turn the selector lever to the DOWN (⬇) position. Operate the lever handle with a pumping action to lower or release the load.
  • Quick Adjustment (Free Spooling): With no load attached, turn the selector lever to the NEUTRAL (Central) position. You can now pull the chain by hand in either direction to quickly position the bottom hook.

Safety Guidelines

Always

  • Store and handle lever hoists correctly in a dry place.
  • Inspect the hoist, chain, and hooks before every use.
  • Ensure the support fits freely into the hook seat and does not exert side thrust.
  • Check that the brake is functioning before lifting the full load.
  • Ensure the bottom hook reaches its lowest point without running the chain against the end stop.
  • Adopt safe slinging practices and follow all site safety instructions.

Never

  • Never extend the lever with a pipe or tube to force the hoist (this indicates overload).
  • Never expose hoists to acids or chemicals without consulting the supplier.
  • Never replace the load chain with a longer one without authorization.
  • Never throw, drop, or drag a lever hoist.
  • Never tip loading or side hooking.
  • Never allow oil or grease to contaminate the brake discs.
  • Never use a defective hoist or one with a twisted chain.

Selection & Maintenance Guide

Selecting the Correct Hoist

Select a hoist based on the capacity and range of lift required. Lever hoists can use either link chain or roller chain. Ensure the hoist is suitable for the environment (e.g., consider corrosion protection for outdoor or marine use).

Storage & Handling

Never return a damaged hoist to storage. Store hoists hanging up to keep chains off the ground. Keep them clean, dry, and protected from corrosion.

The chain and hook are designed for ambient temperatures between -10°C and +50°C. The Seller shall not be liable for brittle fractures occurring in extreme cold (below -10°C) or acidic environments with hydrogen embrittlement risks.

The product must be operated strictly in accordance with EN 13157. Tip loading or side hooking is strictly prohibited. Any fatigue cracks or fractures caused by off-center loading shall be deemed improper use and are excluded from the warranty.

In-service Inspection

Regularly inspect for wear, damage to hooks/fittings, and distortion. Check the chain for nicks, gouges, or stretching. Keep load chains lubricated and free of debris. If the chain jumps, the load slips, or the lever is bent, remove the hoist from service immediately.
